You
can explore calm waters around tidal creeks around
Harkers Island and the mainland on a YOLO (acronym
for "You Only Live Once") board - which
is sort of an oversized surfboard that you paddle
like a canoe.
You can watch wildlife - birds, porpoises, fish
schooling....as you move along on your board. You
start out on your knees on your board - then progress
to a standing position. The paddling is similar
to canoeing - with a side-to-side stroke.

YOLO
boards are made for every age, every size and various
levels of skill (about l8 different boards in all).
Some boards will accommodate two persons - a parent
and child; others are equipped to carry gear (great
if you're going to spend the day out on the water),
and some are designed for speed.
The YOLO board was developed in Santa Rosa, Florida
by Jeff Archer and Tom Losee - for anyone wanting
to experience life on the water - whether it be
fishing, camping, or simply enjoying nature. There
originators also developed a comprehensive workout
program which focuses on balance, coordination and
strenghthening core muscle groups, while also enhancing
posture. YOLO takes you back to the childlike mindset
of living in the moment.
NOTE: Around the Harkers Island/Browns Island area-
- avoid YOLO'ing over oyster rocks - which could
be hazardous to your safety.
